  i see there has already been discussion over lloyd’s new book how to leave the jehovah's witnesses.

  this includes discussion around his personality, motives and financial gains.

  steve2 - I totally agree. Some have moved on after an incident or two with him; others continue to see a pattern and speak up.

  Ruby456 - As someone who has done translation/interpretation work before and is tri-lingual, it is disingenuous to call what he did as “translation” work. He has repeatedly stated in his articles and videos that he is not proficient in the Croatian language and only knows enough to get around. He is/was a proofreader of his wife’s translation work. Anyone with decent writing, grammar and punctuation skills (which would include many on this forum) would be perfectly capable of doing what Lloyd did. From what I understood of their website, he handled the business end of it as a “Director” whilst his wife was “Lead Translator” or something like that. This never made sense to me, since a great majority of their clients would be Croatian speaking people looking for docs to be translated into English. Granted, there will be some English speaking people who would need them into Croatian, but my point is as Director he wasn’t even able to communicate with many of their clients due to the language barrier and his wife undoubtedly had to step in.

  ExJW activism actually was a step up for him since by default he would speak in his native tongue, and not have to gauge someone’s level of English proficiency and have his wife step in and interpret. I understand how it is his job now and how he makes a living. However the contention that he could have run a successful translation business in Croatia doesn’t hold water. The success of that venture would depend almost entirely on the work of his wife, not him.

  i remember an elder questioning a woman who had admitted to giving and receiving oral sex from her unbelieving mate.

  he asked her the most intimate questions which clearly flustered her.

  interestingly, she “confessed “ to the elders because her conscience bothered her.

  There was a supposed letter going round from a brother who had business dealings with people who worked at the UN. He mustered up the courage to ask a high ranking official there when they were planning on doing away with religion. The official then got upset that Jehovah’s Witnesses had cracked the code about the UN and that their dastardly plans were in danger of being leaked ahead of schedule. He told the brother to not say anything and that is was coming soon.

  steve2 - Thanks. Though I appreciate your attempt to be balanced on such a subject, I stand by what I said. Perhaps I worded it in a way that triggers people, but that’s exactly what is part of the problem when discussion revolves around Lloyd. I’m afraid many take what is said about Lloyd and like him, immediately get defensive. After all, I am speaking about a man in his late 30’s, I’m not kicking a little child in the balls. Whenever the Evans mishaps, current and past get discussed, there is a knee-jerk reaction to remind people of his videos and other work as if people aren’t already aware of it. I am aware of it, as much as I am aware of the fact that you can also do these fine works and not be a complete prick at the same time. The fact is he has a well-earned reputation for exactly the same things he accuses others of being. It wasn’t that long ago that he treated this very forum like it was his own domain. His behaviour repulsed me as arrogant and childish. He was known to chastise people and accuse them of keeping him up too late if they dare said something that he felt required his response. He would also use the same opportunity to accuse the same people of keeping him away from his wife and thus harming his relationship. Then stay off the forums if something as trivial as JW related discussions are harming your marriage! He would also announce his holidays as if the forum could not go on without him, and would advise people to PM him in his absence if something came up. As much as he has been attacked, there are plenty of instances if not more of him dishing it out himself.

  Before you tell me to think of the good works he has done, just think for a minute about how effective this man could have been had he not angered this many people by his behaviour and actions. I’d venture to make a prediction - the issue of his making money wouldn’t be such a toxic issue. Having someone on the community payroll to combat WT isn’t a bad idea in itself, but be mindful as to whom you’d want in such a role. A gallant activist who was approachable, tame, well-reasoned and certainly emotionally stable would be primary on my list. Someone who is known to attack any and all people who were not completely in agreement with himself and his methods wouldn’t be.

  Sorry if I over-reacted, but calling Lloyd Evans “emotionally stable” is like calling Donald Trump “meek”.

  As for the evidence you requested regarding where Lloyd said he was earning far less, your contention that I claimed Lloyd said this directly is false. I was responding to the OP which stated:

  “Lloyd is earning far less from his JW activism than he could working full time in his business as a translator.”

  I never implied that Lloyd had stated this directly. Nor was there any hidden meaning behind my comment that Lloyd’s motivations are best known to himself. There has been much stated about that, both negative and positive. I was taking a neutral stance since his motivations are (naturally) best known to himself.

  Did I just hear the the words “Lloyd Evans” and “emotionally stable” in the same sentence? The guy has issues to put it gently. He once left his newborn child with his wife and Marc Latham downstairs at a London Steve Hassan conference so he could grab himself a “podium” as he put it. He was distraught when Steve told him that everyone would be sitting down at a conference table. Needless to say, there was no lift and together with Marc’s assistance his wife got the pram up a flight of stairs with no incident whilst Lloyd went on a frantic search for his podium.

  As for money, he is pulling in $1535 on Patreon monthly. Average wage in Croatia is 6189 Kuna a month which is $1024. This is not even including the $25,000 he has crowdfunded for both books. Nor does it include YT revenue and direct donations to JW Survey (which are solicited on the site).

  So I am not convinced by the contention that he would be earning a lot more as a translator. Minor fact check - Lloyd by his own admission has limited Croatian skills, and certainly not to the level to be involved in direct translation. He was relying on his wife’s translations and then proofreading them.

  His motivations are best known by himself and perhaps his close friends. But let’s not kid ourselves with false information that he is giving up a lot to be an exJW activist, particularly when you consider he is living in a country where he doesn’t speak the language well and his job prospects were already next to non-existent.

  How is taking three years to publish a book you inherited indicative of “poor decisions”? Your choice of words seems to indicate that she purposely delayed it. You be Dykstra. Tell us what you’d do. It’s 2015/16 and the copyright just got transferred to you. You also are elderly and have a spouse who is dying. Go.

  Ray published and distributed Mitchell’s pamphlet when he was alive. It’s not a stretch to assume that he had permission to include it in COC. That pamphlet had been largely forgotten and inclusion in COC would have done the writer a huge favour.

  Dykstra indicated in a previous statement that the copyright did not transfer until 2015. Depends on what you would define as reasonable. An elderly woman whose spouse had been seriously ill for that time period which culminated in his death just this past year shouldn’t be expected to just drop everything because exJWs are clamouring for Ray’s book. If Dykstra is going to be critiqued for not getting outside help, then perhaps Ray and Cynthia Franz could be called out just the same way for letting the copyright fall to an aged woman who was ill-equipped to carry on a legacy and get it re-published. Evidently Ray Franz felt it was more important for his work to fall into the hands of his trusted friends than to hand it off to a younger and more pro-active party.

  Ray sold Jon Mitchell’s pamphlet through Commentary Press and if I remember correctly he referenced it in the Christian Freedom book. The Franz estate might hold the copyright for the Mitchell pamphlet. As for Randy, there’s more to it than the fact he’s a Trinitarian. There was a bit of bad blood between them and Ray felt that Randy tried to upstage COC by releasing his pamphlet about what happened at Bethel in 1980. Interestingly Ray didn’t feel this way about Jon Mitchell’s work. At any rate, I believe the inclusion of the Mitchell piece as well as Dykstra’s addition (especially since she had been slandered and her motives questioned by the same person who violated the copyright) are appropriate. The foreword by Henke sounds a bit fishy though. Guess we’ll have to see how that ties in with Ray’s narrative.
